“I’m a street walkin’ cheetah,” Iggy Pop spat at the beginning of “Search & Destroy.” And that’s where Frank Meyer got the name for his band. Frank is one of the best gonzo journalists in rock, as his work at the now-defunct Pop Smear demonstrates: his interview with David Lee Roth is priceless. This work has led him to meet and connect with his idols, even collaborating with them. If there’s one thing that characterizes the Cheetahs, it’s their albums and collaborations with punk’n’roll legends. They’ve recorded with Wayne Kramer—they’re the only band with whom Wayne has played MC5 repertoire shows—Cherry Currie (Runaways), Deniz Tek, Jeff Dahl, and they’ve also played with Jimmy Zero (Dead Boys). Because if there’s one thing the Street Walkin’ Cheetahs are, it’s a punk’n’roll band with and rooted in it.
