THE BEACH BOYS - SMILE (LP )

"Smile" is the unfinished Beach Boys album intended to follow their 1966 album, Pet Sounds. The project has come to be considered the most legendary unreleased album in the history of popular music. The album was produced and composed almost entirely by Brian Wilson and Van Dyke Parks, who conceived the project as a "teenage symphony to God." It was a concept album that included word paintings, tape manipulation, experiments with musical acoustics, themes of youth and innocence, and comic interludes, drawing on influences from mysticism, pre-rock and roll pop, doo-wop, jazz, ragtime, musique concrète, classical music, American history, poetry, spirituality, and cartoons. A mythology grew up around the project, and its unfulfilled potential inspired many, particularly in the genres of indie rock, post-punk, electronica, and chamber pop.
