IN SEARCH OF THE LIGHT (MEMOIRS OF OLIVER STONE) - OLIVER STONE
The first installment of the memoirs by the Oscar-winning director and screenwriter—in both roles—and equally controversial polemicist, whose list of interviewees also includes figures like Fidel Castro, Hugo Chávez, and Vladimir Putin, was written in the midst of the pandemic. A long three-year wait ensued before the full account of these eventful adventures, written in his own hand, was finally available.
Before moving to Los Angeles and tasting the fruits of international success with Platoon in 1986, Oliver Stone, in order to put an end to his late-adolescent turmoil, tried to straighten out his life by enlisting in the Yankee infantry with the vain hope of finding himself in the hell of Vietnam, being wounded on several occasions—and decorated for his heroic actions—and suffered the inevitable disappointments that await every ambitious screenwriter worth his salt, collecting countless rejected scripts during long years of infamous memory, while barely managing to console himself with the occasional inconsequential commission in New York.
Stone, now over seventy-five, reviews those early years with a detailed account not without its ups and downs: his parents' divorce when he was just sixteen; the Vietnam War; working with Al Pacino on his first screenplays; the agonizing hell of cocaine addiction; the resounding failure of his first film; his risky on-the-ground investigation of Miami's drug cartels for Scarface; and the countless vicissitudes he went through to bring to fruition Salvador, Platoon, Wall Street, and many other works that would shape his already extensive filmography—among them Born on the Fourth of July, JFK, Natural Born Killers, The Doors, Alexander, etc.
