EATER - EATER S/T (LP)
EATER - EATER S/T (LP)
Formed in the early stages of the British punk explosion by four schoolmates in Finchley, North London, Eater quickly established themselves as one of the youngest and rawest groups on the scene. Singer Ashruf Radwan had Egyptian ancestry, concealed by his alias, Andy Blade, and guitarist Brian Haddock became Brian Chevette once in the band; Ashruf's brother, Lutfi, was the group's first drummer, joining under the name Social Demise, but was soon replaced by Roger Bullen, playing under the moniker Dee Generate, while future Vibrator Ian Woodcock was the resident bassist from their second gig. Inspired by a line from T. Rex's song "Suneye," Eater were influenced by the slicker side of glam rock, but were very much a fast-paced power-punk band with their own production.
Their headlining performances at the Roxy club alongside The Damned, The Lurkers, and Sham 69 cemented their reputation, particularly after their material was included on the live compilation album released by Harvest in 1977, and after footage of their club appearances was featured in Don Letts's film Punk Rock Movie. After signing with Dave Goodman's fledgling punk label, The Label, Eater released three singles before their highly anticipated debut album (which came about after Phil Rowland, future member of Slaughter and the Dogs, joined on drums), which has since been hailed as an all-time classic. Pointing the finger at upper-class idiots on songs like "Lock It Up" and poking fun at themselves and their fans on "No Brains," the album also includes two Velvet Underground covers and an unusual David Bowie rendition, all delivered in a no-holds-barred triple-time groove.
