ANOMALY, JOHN KEEL

In 1969, John Keel, frustrated by the amateurishness and lack of rigor in American ufology, decided to take action and create Anomaly, a mail-order newsletter intended to serve as a link, systematize the numerous UFO sightings, and establish best practices for the highly biased field of UFO research. That was the original idea, of course. Later, the newsletter became as surreal and outlandish as the UFO phenomenon itself.

For eleven issues, from 1969 to 1976, John Keel endeavored to establish a common methodology that would allow him to "gather the available facts and present them to the press and the public in a logical and impartial manner," but in parallel he began to collect and share all kinds of press clippings featuring apparitions, monsters, UFOs and bears, lots of bears (!).

Issue by issue, Keel creates a stunning collage that includes his incisive, furiously typed reflections, articles by William Burroughs, and countless other news items that would delight any avid Man in Black fan.

In this way, "Anomalía" makes an important contribution to the advancement of more serious ufological research, but at the same time it functions as a portrait and celebration of an era, of a way of understanding the phenomenon, as exciting as it is almost forgotten.
