THE SET-UP, JOSEPH MONCURE MARCH
THE SET-UP, JOSEPH MONCURE MARCH
Written in 1928, The Set-Up is a long narrative poem about the underworld of American boxing: a stark tragedy told in syncopated rhyming couplets. When the work was first published, it became a bestseller, and in 1949 it was adapted into an award-winning film starring Robert Ryan and Audrey Totter.
This unaltered reprint of the original 1928 poem features dynamic artwork, specially commissioned by Erik Kriek, that vividly conveys the story of Pansy, a promising Black boxer who takes on everyone. Pansy's complicated love life lands him in prison, and his career subsequently plummets, but he continues boxing until the fateful night when his boss and opponent betray him, and he meets a gruesome end at the hands of a gang.
