Wheels of Fortune is a novel that explores the social changes brought about by the arrival of the bicycle in a rigid Victorian society through the story of Hoopdriver, a shop assistant in a London draper's shop who, barely knowing how to ride a bicycle, decides to take a trip through the south of England. Along the way, he encounters a young, progressive cyclist who makes him change his plans. An adventure narrated with distinctly British humor by Wells, who knew those roads firsthand.
