Ronson's book is a masterpiece. The story goes back several decades, and to our current, narrow-minded perspective, the "masterpiece" goes beyond the aesthetic and formal, reaching into the moral realm. It's a childhood comic brimming with believable reality. Small-town reality, which is worth twice as much as urban reality. Moreover, it's a small-town from sixty years ago, which is like talking about another galaxy in terms of, shall we say, more rugged customs and traditions. It has that neo-realist, documentary-like feel, with those rhythms, those compositions, and those faces. No need for morals, happy endings, or any other narrative constraints. A comic that's both sensitive and stark, reminding us of where we come from. Of obligatory mass, throwing stones at dogs, and slapping children without asking. But also of sitting outside in the cool evening air, playing in the street, and wild adventures.
But is this an Autsaider comic? Absolutely! Formal excellence, divergent thinking, and a potential shock to sensitive souls.
An instant classic, as Eduardo Bravo says. A book you can read and reread, one that never loses its impact and that exists on a parallel path to trends and fashions. Its innovative approach, so novel, that it's completely unconventional. The artwork deserves special mention; a mastery that blends clear line with academic style, and an incredible command of anatomy at different ages, brings tears to the eyes of John Byrne, and even John Buscema himself, whenever he recalls his drawings of the Maximoff siblings.
