HOLY SHIT, THAT'S COOL! THE FABULOUS STORY OF THE MOCKING BYRDS, JAVIER PEDRACES

In the final years of the 20th century, the sounds of the sixties revival had their own scene in Spain. Names like Los Flechazos, Los Imposibles, Los Flashback Five, Lazy Sundays, The Allnighters, and Doctor Explosión shared the stage with other, lesser-known groups, forming part of a movement that, in Asturias, led to the emergence in 1995 of the Euro Ye-Ye Festival in Gijón, a major international reference point for mod, garage, and northern soul sounds, which celebrates its thirtieth anniversary in 2024, remaining true to the spirit in which it was born.
The case of the Gijón-based band The Mocking Byrds was particularly striking, as they recorded a full LP in 1996 at London's renowned Toe Rag Studios for Subterfuge Records. Despite its undeniable musical merit, the album was never released. This event served as a starting point for an investigation that encompassed not only the band members but also other individuals who were actively involved in that era, such as Félix A. Domínguez and Jorge Muñoz-Cobo of Doctor Explosión, Eduardo Palacios "Poty" of the Chanel Rock Bar in Oviedo, Jorge Balsera, promoter and manager of several 90s bands, Antoni Gorgues, founder of the Guerssen label, Carlos Galán, head of Subterfuge Records, and Mar Álvarez, guitarist for Undershakers.
Together they tell the story, in the style of a written documentary, tracing the band's history and relating it to a complex network of musicians, groups, albums, recording studios, record labels, concerts, and festivals. This, along with a glossary of over one hundred entries, forms an intense journey through the Spanish independent music scene of the wonderful 90s. This reconstruction culminated in the release by Subterfuge Records of the album recorded in London, mixed and mastered at Circo Perrotti studios in Gijón by Jorge Muñoz-Cobo, in a very limited edition designed by Marc Argenter.
The album and book will serve many as a time machine in which to relive and enjoy that beautiful and vibrant final decade of the 20th century.
