SOMETIMES, GIL SCOTT-HERON

Gilbert Scott-Heron (Chicago, April 1, 1949 – New York, May 27, 2011) was a poet and musician, primarily known in the late 1960s and early 1970s for his spoken-word and sung-poetry performances, which were closely linked to African American activism. He was famous for his song-poem, "The Revolution Will Not Be Televised." In addition to being a leading figure in global music, a genre in which he shone brightly, Scott-Heron was highly influential as a singer, jazz pianist, poet, and novelist. He released more than fifteen albums during his lifetime, and their political content garnered him thousands of followers worldwide. His work reveals a philosophy of life where writing stems from affection and human warmth, and is grounded in artistic and political responsibility. Gil Scott-Heron dedicated more than thirty years of his life to opening people's eyes, minds, and souls. He died in 2011.
